Using Canada's efforts to reduce the national level of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as an example, the colloquium will examine regulatory and policy approaches that may be employed by governments to limit the emissions of dangerous GHGs.
Canada, a country with the second largest geographic area in the world, hosts a variety of hydrocarbon and renewable energy resources in different areas. In light of the commitments made by the Canadian Government in Paris in 2016 to reduce the national level of GHG emissions, the federal government and regional governments (provincial and territorial) have adopted a variety of policies and regulations that reflect regional natural resources and the existing energy infrastructure that has been developed in each jurisdiction. National emissions-reduction targets and carbon pricing mechanisms have been adopted within a Pan-Canadian Framework. Similarities and differences in the availability and level of development of different hydrocarbon and renewable energy resources are reflected in a range of provincial and territorial climate change policy and legal frameworks. Provinces such as Ontario, Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia provide insight into the variety of approaches that may be employed by governments and regulators to reduce GHG emissions.
