Workshop Series Overview

As Qatar and the GCC region continue to make significant strides in higher education, it is essential to address issues in student mental health proactively. The Annual Workshop Series on University Mental Health aims to foster dialogue, share insights, and promote collaboration among key stakeholders to ensure students achieve their academic goals while maintaining health and wellness.

The workshop series, hosted by HBKU, will bring together a group of university counselors, health professionals, educators, researchers, policymakers, and other interested individuals to discuss the current state of student mental workshop series within the GCC higher education sector. The workshop series will serve as a platform for exchanging best practices, encouraging collaboration, and exploring innovative approaches to enhance mental health services for students across the region.

This workshop series will be held in Arabic with live English interpretation.

About

Workshop Series Objectives

  • Presenting the current services available in GCC countries to address student mental health. A particular focus will be on models of service organization and delivery.
  • Identifying the primary mental health concerns that students in GCC universities face.
  • Establishing robust structures and mechanisms for university collaboration on student mental health issues.
  • Sharing best practices by showcasing successful initiatives and programs implemented by universities in the GCC region, which have improved student mental health.
  • Presenting examples of recent global advances in managing student mental health issues from other parts of the world.

  • Ministers of health and ministers of education in GCC countries and beyond.
  • University deans and vice presidents for student affairs.
  • Healthcare professionals, counselors, and other professionals involved in university mental health.
  • University students.
  • Individuals interested in university mental health.

 

Expected Outcomes

  • A statement including recommendations on advancing student mental health services in the region.
  • A proposal to establish an entity for university mental health in Qatar based at HBKU, in collaboration with relevant ministries.
  • A proposal to establish an entity for university mental health in the GCC.
  • A proposal for the launch of a journal on university mental health.
  • A proposal to hold an annual conference covering topics and themes based on the priorities identified in the first meeting.

To Participate

Apply to give a lecture or workshop that addresses any of the following themes:

  • The current state of university mental health, mental health services available, and the main mental health challenges university students face.
  • Practical experience and effective strategies, including the latest advances in university mental health services.
  • Cross-university collaboration, support networks, and partnerships in the field of university mental health.

Preference will be given to topics presenting priorities of the GCC region. Students are also welcome to participate.
