About the Event

This course looks at global and Qatari social entrepreneurship models and how they have established positive social change. Social entrepreneurship is centered on social and economic value creation especially in areas such as human development, education and energy. This course will provide the conceptual and practical bases and characteristics of current social entrepreneurship. The significance and role of social entrepreneurship in the global contemporary capitalist system will also be discussed. Participants will unleash their own projects and be able to scaffold their own ideas.

Course Goals & Objectives

The objective of this course is to 

  • Provide students with knowledge of the concepts, opportunities, limitations and challenges of social entrepreneurship.
  • Equip students with analytical perspectives to compare and contrast conventional and social entrepreneurship models and modalities.
  • Introduce ideas, process, steps, and strategies required to establish social entrepreneurship and produce social/economic value.
  • Present social entrepreneurship models and business skills to address complex social and environmental problems in sustainable and profitable ways with global and Qatari examples.

Desired Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this six-session community class, participants are expected to

  • Conceptualize social entrepreneurship in terms of a formal analytical framework that situates social entrepreneurship within historically changing social values and institutions; 

  • Demonstrate the role of social entrepreneurship in creating innovative responses to critical social needs 

  • Identify and classify factors associated with successful new venture initiation as well as the preparation of a business plan that can be potentially used to establish new social enterprises.
