Islamism: Modernization of Islam or Islamization of Modernity

27Jan2019

Islamization is an attempt to implement certain boundaries on modernization, and more particularly on post-modernism. It attempts to reverse the historical process towards hyper-secular consumerism and pluralism by paradoxically providing a traditional defense against modernity.

In this lecture, Dr. Ahmad Moussalli, Professor of Political Studies at the American University of Beirut, will highlight the history of Islam which partly revolves around the issues of local and global authority, giving rise to periodic social movements of Islamization, which imposed ascetic and literary codes on localist forms.

The event will be held in English, with interpretation provided in Arabic.
