The first cycle proved extremely successful, with a number of high quality proposals received. Listed below are the 10 teams that were awarded the grant fund.

Blind Guardian

Team Members

Dr. Spiridon Bakiras and Elmahdi Abderrahim Bentafat

Idea Focus

We will design and implement a video surveillance system that blindly matches the extracted faces against a suspects database without revealing any information about the underlying individuals. Law enforcement agencies, such as the MoI, may benefit from our system by securing their surveillance data against potential threats.

Moistchar

Team Members

Dr. Gordon McKay, Dr. Tareq Al Ansari and Dr. Hamish Mackey

Idea Focus

The MENA region is developing district cooling for energy efficient cooling. Recycled water has been mandated for this water demanding process but is of insufficient quality to prevent maintenance issues. Our solution converts organic waste to activated carbons tailored for removal of phosphate to polish this water at low cost.

AI Qreatives for Health

Team Members

Dr. Jisun An, Dr. Ingmar Weber, Dr. Louis Fernandez-Luque, Dr. Haewoon Kwak

Idea Focus

Health communicators struggle to measure the actual impact of public health campaigns and create effective campaigns for targeted individuals. Our service aims to predict the Return on Investment (ROI) of the campaigns by analyzing digital footprints and creating appealing ads by artificial intelligence. Our customers are governments, organizations, hospital, and insurance companies.

YouRule

Team Members

Dr. Michael Aupetit, Khalid Kunji

Idea Focus

Childhood obesity epidemic and a lack of interest in STEM are crucial education-related issues in developed countries with knowledge-based economies. We propose YouRule, an education system based on wearable devices and a software application that supports children to create, program, then play in real-world, their own rules of a physical game.

Sustainability Team

Team Members

Dr. Rami Yousef, Ahmed E. ElGharib

Idea Focus

This proposal is to maximize the use of the treated water in producing the fern of azolla which is an organic resource of biofertilizers and biofuel. The project will test the effectiveness of the mass production of azolla under the Qatari weather conditions using the waste water, and testing the efficiency of  the product in improving the water quality to be used in landscape irrigation

Upcycle Recycle

Team Members

Dr. Junaid Saleem, Dr. Gordon McKay

Idea Focus

The overall aim of this project is to develop a recyclable polymeric sponge  for oil clean-up from wastewater. Both commercial polyethylene and plastic waste will be employed to produce sponge. High sorption capacity (100g/g), super-fast sorption rate (five seconds), and recyclability with 100% efficiency will make this product unique and help it stand out. Moreover, the sponge will be ultralight weight and easily portable. Lastly, the idea of controlling pollution using existing wastes will take Qatar one step closer to its sustainability vision.

Crypto Mining Shield

Team Members

Dr. Roberto Di Pietro, Dr. Gabriele Oligeri, Maurantonio Caprolu, Simone Raponi

Idea Focus

Illegal cryptomining is draining computing resources from corporate networks. Our solution, Crypto Shield, employs advanced machine learning techniques to detect and stop 100% of the ongoing attacks.
