HBKU’s Translation and Interpreting Institute to Host Workshop for Media Translation Professionals

The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), will be hosting the Translating News and Views workshop from April 14-17, 2019.
Offered by the Translation and Training Center (TTC), Dr. Ashraf Abdel Fattah, assistant professor at TII, will be leading the workshop, which aims to explore the principles, techniques and constraints of media translation, while also understanding the functions and role of translation in various types of media texts.

The workshop is designed to benefit a range of media professionals: translator-journalists; multilingual journalists; producers working in news agencies and other media outlets; press and communication officers; as well as translation students seeking to enhance their media trans-editing skills.

“HBKU inspires a mindset of continuous growth and an environment of self-development. In hosting this workshop, TII's Translation and Training Center-- offers participants exposure to the latest innovative methodologies in the field of translation, which can enhance and expand their skills for professional growth. This becomes increasingly important in light of media now being a primary industry around the world, where the advent of technology has made it much easier to share user-generated information.  As an advocate of innovation in Qatar and beyond, TII is building bridges for the pursuit of new solutions to the global challenges facing our media professionals,” said Nada Al-Mahmeed, Director of the Translation and Training Center at TII.

Combining a theoretical and practical approach, the workshop will focus on exploring the various types, genres, and modes of media texts, including audiovisual and social media. Participants will be given hands-on experiences in analyzing selected news stories, and applying the theoretical concepts and trans-editing techniques and skills. The workshop will also be an opportunity to reflect on the role of the translator-journalist as a mediator, negotiator, or ‘re-narrator’ of news stories.

TII’s Translating News and Views workshop will be held at the Penrose House building (formerly LAS building) at HBKU from 4-7pm. Applicants are encouraged to register ahead of time to secure their place.
