Excellence HBKU’s College of Islamic Studies Professor Delivers Al Sharq Youth Training Session
Participants encouraged to engage with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Dr. M. Evren Tok, an associate professor with the College of Islamic Studies (CIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), was among the facilitators at a recent training session co-organized by the Al Sharq Youth and Impact Platform.
Taking place August 10 at the Al Sharq Forum offices in Istanbul, the event was the first of its kind since the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Turkey. Using the Lego Serious Play methodology, 17 participants from Al Sharq Youth’s Istanbul Hub worked individually and in teams to identify global problems that challenge human development. Upon identification, an empathy mapping technique was used to pinpoint particularly vulnerable populations. Facilitators then encouraged participants to develop solutions that resonate with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Speaking after the session, Dr. Evren Tok, Assistant Dean for Innovation and Community Engagement and Associate Professor, CIS, said: “While we all have a vested interest in fulfilling the SDGs, it’s nevertheless important that we encourage youths to engage with the issues that inform them. Out of engagement comes empowerment and the potential for youth-oriented solutions for some of the greatest challenges facing our world. In this respect, the Lego Serious Play methodology is one of the most effective ways of introducing the SDGs to future generations.
“I’d also like to pay tribute to my fellow facilitators. Under the current circumstances, organizing any kind of event is by no means easy. However, their implementation of common sense precautions ensured that today’s session was both safe and productive.”
