Exclusive Student Interview Ali Hassan Al-Rashid

Why did you choose HBKU and this particular degree program?

HBKU has a great reputation among academic institutions across the world. Indeed, HBKU is one of the few universities around the world that offers interdisciplinary programs that provide the opportunity to engage deeply in discovery in various innovative ways. The PhD in Computer Science and Engineering program at HBKU was the perfect choice for me as it provides up-to-date knowledge of computer science and engineering, as well as the methods, tools, and technologies necessary to succeed.  The program aligned perfectly with my career aims, including my desire to actively contribute to Qatar’s National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030). HBKU’s rewarding academic experience and innovative research environment fully support QNV 2030, so it was an obvious choice to study there.

How has your classwork, research, advice from your professors and/or your overall experience at HBKU shaped your next step and your longer-term career goals and ambitions?

I will always look back at my time in HBKU with great fondness. I have built special relationships with my professors and they are a source of inspiration and motivation for me, especially because they are experts in their fields and have made good contributions to scientific research.
I am so proud to say that I worked so hard with my advisor, Dr. Roberto Di Pietro, to be able to make a new contribution to my study field. It was an interesting journey during my research, especially when I solved complicated problems in scientific research and published a number of papers globally. Thanks to the high-quality education and faculty support I received at HBKU, I was able to tackle complex issues in computer science and engineering, which meant I could fulfill my potential. I believe CSE has provided me with strong research experience that will benefit me throughout my career.

What was the highlight of your time at HBKU?

Of course, studying for a PhD at HBKU is not an easy task and it requires a lot of effort throughout the journey. However, the availability of evening classes for my PhD program encouraged me to complete my higher studies. Such an option enabled me to create a work-life balance that inspired me to read and work more in research and it came with new topics that added a scientific value. As a result, I was able to achieve my ambitions and I was very pleased with the progress I made during my time at HBKU. For example, it was a great honor when four of my innovations were recognized at the 11th International Invention Fair in the Middle East. I received the grand prize and three gold medals and one silver, which made me very proud. Also, I implemented my research in different projects in Qatar that added value in our society.
