Gut-Brain Axis and Mental Health | Hamad Bin Khalifa University
College of Health and Life Sciences

Preclinical and clinical evidence suggests that defects in communication between the gut and brain may have implications in many health diseases including mental health.

The gut and brain are closely connected and communicate via the vagus nerve. Gut-brain communication could depend on microbiome-derived metabolites and/or activation of the immune response.

Whether and how changes in diet, alteration in the gut microbiome or its metabolites, or defects in gut physiology itself influence behavior or activity of the neural circuits are some of the emerging and exciting concepts in mental health disorders.
