CIS’ Dr. Ray Jureidini Speaks to MPP Students on Ethics of Migration

Dr. Ray Jureidini, Professor of Migration, Human Rights, and Ethics at the College of Islamic Studies (CIS), HBKU, presented a guest lecture on migrant labor and the ethics of migration and human rights to second-year students in the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program.

Given his long-term engagement and extensive work on the topic, Dr. Ray was able to provide perspectives that covered the last 10 years, where he analyzed issues, policies, regulations, and laws relating to recruitment, contracts, payment, health and safety, housing and allowances, among other areas. He also shared insights into his current research examining food security among migrant workers.

Joined by Dr. Logan Cochrane, Associate Professor at CPP, the MPP students engaged Dr. Ray in their research projects, and they were encouraged to specialize in either social policy and/or environment and energy. The guest lecture keeps with CPP’s aims, through the MPP, to link global policy issues and dynamics with the national context and that of the wider region.

With extensive experience in Australia, Egypt (as a director of the Center for Migration and Refugee Studies) and Lebanon (including the Institute for Migration Studies at LAU), Dr. Ray has also served as a consultant to the Migrant Worker Welfare Initiative at Qatar Foundation.
