Research Writing Skills Workshop Hones Participant Abilities
Targeting the right audiences and journals for academic publishing formed part of the training

Dr. Rima Isaifan, the Head of Academic and Journals Publishing at Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press), provided a seminar titled Introduction to Academic and Research Writing Skills to students from Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE) on November 24, 2021.

During the presentation, Dr. Isaifan introduced the best practices used when writing for the niche market of scholarly research. Participants explored a range of writing styles and how to organize their work for different types of scholarly publications. They also reviewed the basics of referencing, paraphrasing, and how to cite sources ethically. Participants were advised on how to target the right journals for submission and how to address peer reviewers’ comments to effectively incorporate changes in manuscripts that need to be resubmitted for acceptance.

Dr. Isaifan said: “The partnership between HBKU Press and CSE aimed to provide support for graduate students to help them navigate the specifics of research writing and guide them through the process of scholarly publication in the academic field.”

On the collaboration, Prof. Muammer Koç, Founding Professor and Head of Sustainability Division of CSE, said: “Academic writing is a critical component of the whole research experience. At the Sustainability Division of CSE, we are open to collaboration with our partners to expose and train our PhD and MS students in an effort to improve their academic writing skills and research ethics.”
