CIS Holds Guest Lecture on Shah Waliullah al-Dahlavi’s Contributions to Muslim Thought

Dr. Marcia Hermansen introduced al-Dahlavi’s spiritual system and the modern-day significance of his writings

Dr. Hermansen’s talk detailed al-Dahlavi’s writings on 18th century Islamic rule in India and their relevance to today’s Muslims.

The Muhammad Bin Hamad Al Thani Center for Muslim Contribution to Civilization at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Islamic Studies (CIS) hosted a guest lecture given by Dr. Marcia Hermansen, Professor and Director of Islamic World Studies, Loyola University Chicago, highlighting 18th century Islamic scholar Shah Waliullah al-Dahlavi and his contributions to contemporary Muslim thought.

Dr. Hermansen’s talk, titled “ Islamic Ethics between the Late Pre-modern and the Early Modern: The Spiritual System of Shah Waliullah al-Dahlavi (d. 1762),” detailed al-Dahlavi’s writings that covered many prominent issues concerning Islamic rule in 18th-century India. She also highlighted aspects of al-Dahlavi’s spiritual system and deliberated on the significance of his work to modern Muslims.
