Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press (HBKU Press) continues to honor its commitment to community engagement by hosting a special event with Qatari hero and Olympic gold medalist, Mutaz Barshim. On December 1st, Barshim visited Qatar Academy Doha (QAD), member of Qatar Foundation (QF), to discuss the HBKU Press-published children’s book chronicling his historic victory at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics when, in a stunning display of sportsmanship, he chose to share the high jump gold. “Winning Beyond Gold!” is the inspiring true story of a champion who learns that victory is about more than just winning.
“We are proud to tell the story of one of Qatar’s most celebrated athletes,” said Bachar Chebaro, Executive Director, HBKU Press. “ By organizing events like this, we help to inspire the next generation of readers and athletes, furthering our mission of making a positive impact beyond publishing.”
The hugely successful event saw 300 students in attendance. Proceedings began with a special personal introduction and inspiring short video, after which Barshim discussed “Winning Beyond Gold!” to Qatar Academy’s 4th and 5th graders. This was followed by a Q&A session giving students the opportunity to ask him about his Olympic journey. The event concluded with a meet-and-greet, where fans had the opportunity to get their very own copies of the book signed by Mutaz himself.

“Winning Beyond Gold!” adapts Barshim’s lessons and successes in an illustrated children’s book, teaching young readers the power of perseverance, discipline, and following their dreams. It is published by HBKU Press in both Arabic and English, and available for purchase in store and online through local apps Snoonu and Rafeeq.
