HBKU and Qatar Shell Launch Joint Research Seminar Series

To bridge the gap between academia and industry, Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Science and Engineering (CSE) and Qatar Shell are initiating The Joint Sustainability Research Seminars (JSRS) on February 28. The maiden lecture is one of three lectures offered this academic year, and will focus on Global Energy Transition and Shell. It will be delivered by Dr. Dhruv Arora, who has extensive expertise in the field of sustainable development.

Discussions will aim to provide students, staff, faculty, and all attendees with an industry insider’s perspective on efforts that are underway to preserve and protect the environment by targeting sustainable growth in the energy and water sectors.

To be held at the Liberal Arts and Science (LAS) Building in Education City, the lecture will additionally provide guests with a unique opportunity to network with subject matter experts. Attendees will learn more about the significant steps that the oil and gas industry leader is presently taking to build a low-carbon energy future and enable consumer access to modern energy.

CSE, a multidisciplinary college with three divisions in the fields of Life Sciences, Information and Computing Technology, and Sustainable Development, leads higher education programs that aim to tackle today’s challenges and opportunities in engineering, science, and e-technology. Dr. Mounir Hamdi, dean of CSE, said, “We continuously endeavor to complement all academic and theoretical knowledge of our programs with industrial insights to achieve a more informed understanding of the world. The Joint Research Seminar Series with Qatar Shell is a critical undertaking to link industry and academia as we strive to enhance the learning experience of our students and inform the general public, building on solid expertise that our partners at Qatar Shell can provide.”

Dr. Dhruv Arora is the research and development and technology manager at the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Center (QSRTC). Under his stewardship, the center plans to continue research and development efforts in catalyst, water, corrosion and CO2 utilization, and initiate new research themes that are aligned with Qatar National Vision for 2030.

Dr. Dhruv holds a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi, India; a PhD in mechanical engineering and material science; and an MBA from the Rice University in Houston, USA.

The Joint Sustainability Research Seminars (JSRS) builds on the shared values to strengthen awareness about energy and environmental sustainability. Upcoming lectures, scheduled to be held in March and April, will include specialist insight into integrated onsite water and material and corrosion in the oil and gas industry.
