The unique challenges posed by translating key legal texts from English to Arabic and vice versa was the subject of a recent seminar organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and College of Law (CL).

Translating International Law from English into Arabic: Challenges and Rewards was led by award winning Professor Dr. Mahmoud Alhirthani, who shared insights into his translation of Brownlie’s Principles of Public International Law by James R. Crawford (Oxford University Press 8th ed. 2012), a leading international law publication. His translation received second place in the Single Book category for the prestigious Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding 2023.

Dr. Alhirthani was joined by the Dean of the College of Law Dr. Susan L. Karamanian, who moderated the session and added a legal perspective to the discussion. The session concluded with questions and answers, as well as additional audience contributions.
