6th MENA Environmental Law and Policy Scholars’ Conference: Water Security and Environmental Law in the Middle East and North African (MENA) Region
Conference Overview
The UNESCO Chair on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) is a proud partner in the upcoming 6th MENA Environmental Law and Policy Scholars Conference, which will be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and organized by the Association of Environmental Law Lecturers in Middle East and North African Universities (ASSELLMU), and the Faculty of Law at Arab East Colleges.
The conference aims to bring together experts to discuss strengthening environmental law education and practice in the region. It will provide a platform for knowledge exchange on the resources, skills, approaches, and methodologies needed to equip students and future regional environmental administrators with the legal and governance skills to advance the SDGs in their spheres of operation.
The conference will feature several speakers from HBKU, including Dean Susan Karamanian, College of Law, Dr. Damilola Olawuyi, UNESCO Chairholder on Environmental Law and Sustainable Development at HBKU, and Dr. Evren Tok, College of Public Policy.
The plenary session and workshops will explore the role of environmental law in accelerating progress on water security across the MENA region. The conference will cover national, regional, and international law aspects with a focus on four main topics:
- Water and international environmental law: Key multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and their potential in accelerating water security in the MENA region.
- Domestic and regional approaches: Latest developments in adopting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and multistakeholder approaches across the region.
- Environmental law education for SDG implementation: The role of environmental law education, research institutes, and chairs in advancing water security in the MENA region.
- Practical applications: Current capacity development gaps and needs of the judiciary, environmental law agencies, and ministries in the region, and how they can be met.
