Developed by The University of Queensland (UQ), the 3MT competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports students’ capacity to effectively explain their research in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience in three minutes.
Currently, 3MTs are held at more than 900 universities in 85 countries.
Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) will be joining these regional competitions as it hosts the first MENA 3MT (Three Minute Thesis) competition on October 2024 at the Auditorium, Minaretein, Education City, Doha, Qatar. The MENA 3MT features competitors representing universities from across 19 countries in the region: Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Palestine, and Yemen.
In addition to providing learning opportunities to graduate students in the region, the MENA 3MT aims to:
- Celebrate graduate students’ achievements in research.
- Promote the numerous graduate programs available in the region.
- Facilitate and strengthen collaborations among universities.

Transportation
Karwa Taxi
Karwa is the national taxi and limousine service. To book a taxi call +974 800 8294. You can pay by cash, bank card or mobile payment.
Karwa taxis can be ordered or pre-booked via the Karwa Taxi app (available on iOS and Android), or hailed from the street.
UBER taxi service is also active in Qatar.
You can use your international driving license for seven consecutive days.
Metro
The metro system has three lines (Gold, Green and Red) covering 37 stations. Trains run every 3 minutes and staff are available at every station to assist you during your journey.
You can buy a travel card at stations and then save time by topping up online or on the Qatar Rail app (iOS and Android).
All stations have elevators and all train carriages provide space for wheelchair users and pushchairs, as well as guide dog allowances. You can check the Qatar Rail website before you travel.
Free metrolink buses run useful routes within 2 - 5 km of stations.
If you are traveling to central Doha, you can take the metro to one of these stations, which are conveniently located to access the Corniche area. You can change lines at Al Bidda (Red and Green) stations and Msheireb (Red, Green and Gold)

Participation
Competition Rules
- All presentations MUST be in the English language.
- A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted. Slide transitions, animations, or any form of movement are not allowed. The slide should be presented from the beginning of the oration.
- No additional electronic media, such as sound and video files, are permitted.
- No additional props, including costumes, musical instruments, or laboratory equipment, are permitted.
- Presentations must not exceed a maximum of 3 minutes. Competitors who exceed this time limit will be disqualified.
- Presentations must be conveyed through spoken word; this means no poems, raps, or songs are allowed.
- Presentations are to commence from the stage.
- Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation through either movement or speech.
- The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

- Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled as PhD students within the MENA region.
- Individuals who have already completed their PhD or are currently pursuing a master's degree are not eligible to compete.

Judging Criteria
Every competitor will be evaluated based on the judging criteria outlined below. Each criterion holds equal weight and places a significant emphasis on the audience.
Comprehension and Content
- The presentation offered a clear background and significance to the research question.
- The presentation provided clear positionality of the presenter to the research and research approach.
- The presentation clearly described the research strategy/design and the results/findings of the research.
- The presentation clearly described the research's conclusions, outcome, and its overall impact.
Engagement and Communication
- The oration was presented clearly, with language suitable for a non-specialist audience.
- The PowerPoint slide was well-defined and enhanced the presentation.
- The presenter conveyed enthusiasm for their research, effectively capturing and maintaining the audience's attention.
