An opportunity to highlight university’s AI research projects and initiatives
In line with its mission to propel Qatar’s knowledge base and shape novel solutions for a global impact, Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) was a proud knowledge partner and participant at the 11th edition of Qatar Foundation’s (QF) WISE Summit.
Held November 28 and 29 at Qatar National Convention Center, WISE 11 explored the theme of “Creative Fluency: Human Flourishing in the Age of AI,” and HBKU’s involvement reflected the full extent of its research and interest in this subject. Faculty, researchers and staff representing HBKU’s colleges and research institutes participated in a variety of sessions, including panel talks, policy roundtables, and research presentations. Discussions focused on efforts to build an inclusive global AI landscape, how AI can enhance and transform education, ethical AI, and much more.
HBKU’s exhibition space at WISE 11 not only showcased the university’s AI-focused research and initiatives but also provided attendees with unique opportunities for engagement. Among the notable research exhibits were the Qatar Computing Research Institute’s (QCRI) evaluation framework for large language models; NeuroX, a method for understanding what AI models learn; and QVoice, an application for Arabic pronunciation. Additionally, the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) featured research projects that automatically detect attention levels in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, visually explore chains of narrators in Hadith, and the remote exploration of various locations and spaces. For its part, the College of Islamic Studies showcased Sharia Bot, a shariah-compliance navigator tool, featuring an artificially intelligent advisory chatbot.
HBKU was represented at WISE 11 by the College of Islamic Studies; College of Humanities and Social Sciences; College of Science and Engineering; College of Public Policy; Qatar Computing Research Institute; and HBKU Press.
