The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is accepting submissions for its 12th International Translation Conference, which will take place from March 15-16, 2023.

Under the theme “Translation and Creativity: An Interdisciplinary Encounter”, the conference invites scholars who put creativity at the heart of their work, to share their experiences and knowledge across various areas of inquiry and contexts of practice - both regionally and internationally.

Coinciding with the celebration of its 10th anniversary, TII will convene the interdisciplinary forum to explore emerging intersections between translation and creativity with a special emphasis on the multilayered processes of mediation and theorization of creativity across disciplines and practical contexts.

Among the sub-themes which scholars are asked to consider are: creative labor in the technological environment, theoretical and methodological approaches to addressing creativity in translation, aesthetic and political forms of translation in digital and non-digital environments, the use of translation in creative research, the place of creative translation in copyright policies and in public domain endeavors, and others.

Commenting on the focus of the biennial conference, Dr. Amal Al-Malki, Founding Dean, CHSS, said “Creativity is indispensable to translation as each language has its unique beauty and power. When we translate, we mirror the artistic features of the text without neglecting the cultural specifics. Indeed, creativity exists in various forms and disciplines, acting as a lighthouse that leads the way for scholars. In its 12th edition, our International Translation Conference will highlight this significant area as well as the linguistic, cultural, technological, social, and political processes involved in the creation.”

Research proposals (in either Arabic or English) should be submitted online by September 8, 2022, with notification of acceptance by October 9, 2022. For more information, please visit www.tii.qa/12th
