World-Renowned Global Policy Scholar Speaks at MPP Specialization Lab

Dr. Diane Stone, Chair of Global Policy at the School of Transnational Governance, part of the European Union Institute (EUI), lectured students in the Specialization Lab course in the Master’s of Public Policy (MPP) program.

During her lecture, Dr. Stone discussed “Science, Experts and Evidence in Global Policy Networks”. She emphasized that global governance and global policy, and their transnational administration, are highly reliant on expertise. Such expertise creates a “transnational ecology of power” which may assist, challenge, and reframe traditional understandings of state-led global governance. The networks of expertise may take several forms, which include global (public) policy networks, transnational advocacy networks, trans-governmental networks, and knowledge networks. Dr. Stone also spoke about the importance of science diplomacy and how it translates into the use of science in diplomacy as evidence for global policy actors, as well as for diplomacy toward transnational cooperation or improving international relations. Students were able to interact with Dr. Stone following her presentation.

CPP is committed to providing students with a unique educational experience through the Specialization Lab and its guest speakers. Building on this objective, Dr. Stone will visit CPP in person as an Eminent Policy Scholar for one week in February 2022 to give a keynote address, a seminar, and interact with students at CPP, as well as Education City universities and institutions. Dr. Stone is one of the world’s most highly-cited and prolific scholars of global policy, public policy, and transnational administration.
