The initiative is part of a campaign to preserve the environment, support replantation efforts
The Qur’anic Botanic Garden (QBG), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has donated a large collection of tree seedlings and saplings that the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy will use to decorate stadiums and facilities hosting the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™.
The initiative is part of QBG’s efforts to promote green recovery and environmental conservation efforts and will feature the distribution of 499 varieties of ornamental trees, perennial herbaceous plants, and shrubs that provide an aesthetic character to the facilities.
The donated offshoots were cultivated in QBG’s herbarium, a hub that employs the latest horticultural practices in the areas of cultivation and management to preserve plant life under various climate conditions. The center also hosts the mother trees to source the required seeds.
The latest initiative is part of the long-standing ‘Ghars’ campaign launched by QBG after Qatar secured the bid to host the World Cup. The campaign will result in the planting of 2,022 trees by the time the FIFA World Cup 2022 ends, in a symbolic move that projects to the world Qatar’s commitment to the environment.
Engineer Mohamed Hassouna, a horticultural expert at QBG, noted that the “ongoing cooperation between the Garden and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy reflects the extent of integration and coordination among all state institutions to leverage the 2022 World Cup to build a sustainable legacy for Qatar and the entire Arab region.”
“Since its inception, the Ghars campaign has inspired many green initiatives in Qatar at the national, institutional, and personal levels. Many similar campaigns have been already launched as a result, reflecting the success of the campaign and its impact on society and the environment,” Eng. Hassouna said.
QBG has been keen on promoting afforestation efforts as part of its role in preserving the environment and protecting biodiversity on several fronts. QBG’s efforts range from the free distribution of trees to providing guidance on cultivating plants as well as producing and preserving seedlings at the herbarium and rehabilitating natural habitats with local desert plants. These initiatives contribute to global campaigns, including the United Nations’ (UN) Sustainable Development Goals and the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
