Dr. Oluwaseun Ogunbiyi recognized for outstanding contributions to chemical engineering

Entity:  Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute
Dr. Ogunbiyi received the honor for his contributions to the field and for demonstrating leadership in advancing research.

Dr. Oluwaseun Ogunbiyi, Scientist at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), has been recognized as a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE). This title is awarded to professionals who have made substantial contributions to the field of chemical engineering and shown exceptional leadership and dedication to advancing research and development.

Since joining QEERI, Dr. Ogunbiyi has immersed himself in several research projects, particularly in the area of wastewater treatment and pollutant removal. He co-led a pilot study on advanced oxidation processes, which focused on the removal of pollutants from treated sewage effluent. His research in oily water separation has resulted in the development of new technologies, leading to multiple technical and review publications, as well as a US Provisional Patent Application for an improved oil absorption membrane—a technology with potential applications in oil spill management and produced water treatment.

Dr. Ogunbiyi has also been actively involved in various Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) projects, including serving as Principal Investigator on a project focused on removing cyanotoxins from drinking water using advanced oxidation processes. His efforts have secured over USD 500,000 in grant funding from QNRF, further solidifying his impact in the field. Beyond his research, Dr. Ogunbiyi is dedicated to mentoring young engineers, having guided numerous graduates and interns in the areas of wastewater treatment and plant operations.

In addition to his roles in industry and academia, Dr. Ogunbiyi is an active member of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers’ research and education group, where he contributes to discussions on chemical engineering developments relevant to Nigeria and Africa. His election as a Fellow of IChemE is a testament to his contributions to chemical engineering, underscoring a career marked by a commitment to advancing the field.
