The Research Center for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE), member of Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, is hosting a public lecture entitled: “The Migrant Labor Reform in Qatar: Towards a More Holistic Approach”. The event will be held on Wednesday 2nd of March, from 7pm to 9pm at the QFIS building in Education City.
The lecture will be presented by Dr. Ray Jureidini, Professor of Migration, Human Rights and Ethics at CILE. Dr. Jureidini’s research interests include migration, human and labor rights, human trafficking, gender discrimination, racism and xenophobia. From 2012 to 2013, he served as a consultant to the Migrant Workers Welfare Initiative at Qatar Foundation in Doha, contributing to the QF Standards of Migrant Workers Welfare for contractors and sub-contractors and completing a report on labor recruitment for Qatar.
The lecture will review the recent reform legislation in Qatar, including the kafala system, exit visas and wage protection, as well as the bilateral agreements with Nepal on migrant labor recruitment. The lecture will also tackle the importance of these reforms for protecting the workers' rights, and suggests procedures and regulations that could help reach a more holistic reform agenda.
The lecture will be presented in English. Simultaneous translation into Arabic will be available.
