CL Faculty Member Awarded International Research Prize

Award covers research on countering terrorism in family courts

Dr. Fatima Ahdash

At the Annual Meeting of the Socio-Legal Studies Association (SLSA), held at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2024, Dr. Fatima Ahdash, Assistant Professor of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Law, was awarded the SLSA Article Prize for her article ‘Countering terrorism in the family courts: a dangerous development’ (2023), published in Modern Law Review 86(5): 1197–123.

Reflecting on the award, Dr. Ahdash observed: “I was delighted to be awarded the highly prestigious Socio-Legal Studies Association’s Article Prize. The article examines the involvement of the family justice system in the UK and Europe in countering terrorism. I look forward to expanding the focus of my research beyond Europe to look at the relevance of this phenomenon in MENA generally and the GCC more specifically.”

HBKU College of Law Dean Susan L. Karamanian noted that: “The College of Law community congratulates Dr. Ahdash on winning this acclaimed award for her outstanding article, which critically examines how family courts in the UK and Europe have become battle grounds for counter-terrorism, pitting children against parents and the like.  The human rights implications are substantial, which Dr. Ahdash has established, yet even more compelling is how the development causes the reader to re-think the role of courts in society.”
