A chance to master the interpreting of health and medical content

Entity:  College of Humanities and Social Sciences
Medical Translation will be delivered by Dr. Ashraf Mohamed Abdel Fattah, an assistant professor at the Translation and Interpreting Studies Department.

As part of its mission to enrich societies with transformative educational experiences,  the Translation and Interpreting Institute  at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) is putting the finishing touches to its latest workshop.

Organized by the Translation and Training Center of CHSS’ Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), Medical Translation primarily targets professionals interested in mastering the interpreting of health and medical content from English into Arabic. Applications are expected from across the healthcare sector as well as fluent Arabic speakers keen to know more about the practices and resources associated with medical translation. The workshop is also likely to be of interest to media and communication professionals, particularly those already working in healthcare settings.

Medical Translation will be delivered by Dr. Ashraf Mohamed Abdel Fattah, an assistant professor at the Translation and Interpreting Studies Department. Dr. Fattah has at least 30 year’s professional experience of translation, interpreting, journalism and relevant training and development. Prior to joining HBKU he was a senior interpreter at Aljazeera Arabic Channel in Doha and Middle East bulletin editor at Associated Press Television News (APTN) in London.

Speaking ahead of the workshop, Nada Al-Mahmeed, Director of TII’s Translation and Training Center (TTC), CHSS, said: “As Qatar has a growing and fluid population, it is essential for the country to provide excellent healthcare services. Language differences must never stand in the way of delivering effective treatment. Accordingly, the need for well-qualified healthcare translation and interpreting professionals has never been greater. We’re looking forward to delivering a workshop that goes some way to meeting demand.”

Medical Translation takes place from March 8 to 11 and between 4:00pm and 7:00pm at Classroom A015, Penrose House (LAS building), Education City.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Translation and Interpreting Institute regularly hold events to highlight their research activities and projects. For more information, please visit chss.hbku.edu.qa
