HBKU to Offer Public Workshops on Subtitling and Sports Translation

15 Jan 2018

In an effort to extend specialized training opportunities to professionals within the interpretation industry, the Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is offering two public workshops this month on Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling, as well as Approaches to Translating Sports Documents.

Both upcoming sessions are part of TII’s ongoing translation education and interpretation development workshops, which seek to offer one-of-a-kind instruction to those with advanced skills within the interpretation and translation industry. Nabeel Rashid, acting director of the Translation and Training Center at TII, said: “As industries in Qatar increasingly realize the need to communicate across cultures, tap into new markets and inspire new audiences – the demand for high-quality translators and interpreters grows manifold.

Through our upcoming workshops on subtitling and sports translation, we aim to provide Qatar-based translators and interpreters with direct access to specialized areas of translation that will continue to be in demand as the business sector burgeons.”

Scheduled to be held from January 21 to 24, the Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling workshop will introduce participants to the techniques of intralingual and interlingual subtitling. The sessions will also shed light upon the specific formal and discursive features of subtitling, such as temporal and spatial constraints; timing; condensation; verbal and non-verbal cues; appropriate punctuation; positioning and segmentation.

Next, TII will host its Approaches to Translating Sports Documents workshop from January 28 to 31, where instructors will teach participants techniques that are considered best practice among translators and editors in the sports sector. Attendees will also learn how to draft a sports translation revision report to further practice quality control in this field.

Both workshops will be conducted in English and Arabic, with both languages being the two primary mediums of communication.

Held at the Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Building in Education City, the workshops are open for registration. To learn more about the workshops, visit www.tii.qa/community
