CSE Research Initiative Secures Funding from Waseda University's Qatar Chair
Grant to support research into women-only running groups in Qatar and Japan
Researchers from the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) have received a prestigious research grant highlighting the importance of their study on women’s participation in sports in Qatar and Japan. This project is supported by Waseda University’s Qatar Chair, which facilitates cross-cultural academic collaborations.
Dr. Christos Anagnostopoulos, UNESCO Chairholder on Governance and Social Responsibility in Sport and Assistant Professor, CSE, together with Farah Z. Ali, MSc student in Sport and Entertainment Management, collaborated with Dr. Donna Wong, Associate Professor at the School of Sport and Sciences, Waseda University, Japan. They secured a grant worth ¥1,000,000 to explore the unique dynamics within women-only running groups in the culturally diverse landscapes of Qatar and Japan. The research aims to show how these groups help women balance cultural constraints with their aspirations for autonomy and self-expression, shaping both personal and collective identities.
The Chair of the State of Qatar for Islamic Area Studies at Waseda University fosters academic cooperation between Qatar, Japan, and the global community through research initiatives, talks, workshops, seminars, and conferences on related topics.
Dr. Anagnostopoulos remarked: “Though the grant amount is modest, its significance extends beyond monetary value. It marks our university's first successful joint research proposal for this competitive grant, strengthening ties between the two countries and our institutions. The study of running groups in Qatar and Japan, operating within distinct socio-cultural contexts, offers vital insights. We anticipate our findings having significant implications for policymakers and local sports organizations committed to expanding women's access to sport, advocating for environments that promote inclusivity and empowerment.”
Dr. Donna Wong, expressed her enthusiasm: “I am thrilled that we have secured this grant, which will enable us to strengthen our collaboration. This partnership began when Dr. Anagnostopoulos invited me to join the UNESCO Chair’s Advisory Committee, and I look forward to furthering our joint research efforts.”
Professor Mounir Hamdi, Dean, CSE, added: “This achievement underscores our faculty’s dedication to fostering meaningful collaborations with students, as well as building international partnerships with esteemed institutions aligned with Qatar’s research priorities.”
Looking ahead, the research team plans to present its preliminary findings at the 2025 Summit on Communication and Sport. Taking place next March in Chicago, the Summit aims to influence global discourse on women's participation in sports. The project is expected to conclude by the end of May 2025, with an eye toward expanding the study to include additional countries from the region in the future. This initiative not only cements the relationship between Qatar and Japan but also sets a precedent for similar cross-cultural research collaborations.
