Exclusive Student Interview - Shaikha Al-Misned

Why did you choose HBKU and this particular degree program?

I have always been concerned with the multitude of global challenges and injustices that have become a reality of how we experience life. To develop my knowledge regarding what could be done to help overcome these challenges, and create a better world for all, I decided to continue my education and pursue a comparative law degree that would provide me with both an international and national understanding of law and policy.

My goal from a young age has always been to excel and pursue an education that will allow me to give back to Qatar. At a time where my country is facing political and economic obstacles, I have never felt more passionate about this goal than I do now.

The College of Law’s Juris Doctor (JD) program allowed me to achieve these goals perfectly and I found it to be a remarkable program with brilliant faculty members and excellent facilities.

How has your classwork, research, advice from your professors, and/or your overall experience at HBKU shaped your next step and your longer-term career goals and ambitions?

My experience at HBKU and the education I gained have given me great strength and knowledge. I have learned how to take a holistic view of issues and be flexible in creating solutions. The comparative approach to learning I have developed has expanded my knowledge of global issues and critical thinking. I have a better understanding of the diverse jurisdictions around the world, which is a helpful tool that will allow me to collaborate on solving global problems.

The more I understand the issues facing the world, the more I feel a sense of responsibility to help in some way. Therefore, in the longer term, I hope to be in a position to support the global efforts of nations that come together to coordinate and create comprehensive multilateral responses to help countries in need and to respond to emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was the highlight of your time at HBKU?

The past three years of the JD program have flown by very quickly and even though it feels like the first day of class was just yesterday, a lot has happened in that time. I have many memories that I can look back at to remember what a great time this has been.

I had the honor of meeting different people with diverse expertise and creating valuable connections with my colleagues and professors. Engaging in conversation with them is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling memories from my time here.

I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to go through my educational journey at QF, which provides such an advanced environment. I am grateful to be in a community that is so understanding and encouraging of education. I am very proud to be a national of Qatar, a country that has made education a priority globally.
