Mughal Glass A History of Glassmaking in India

18Sep2024

This lecture will be held in English.

The history of Mughal glass has long been neglected; leading scholars to speculate as to whether these spectacular objects are European imports, made from European glass and decorated in India, or of entirely Indian manufacture. Unraveling this mystery is renowned curator and author Dr. Tara Desjardins.

In this lecture, Dr. Desjardins will showcase the captivating world of Mughal glass. Drawing from her comprehensive catalogue of Mughal glass objects gathered from both public and private collections around the world, featured in her book "Mughal Glass: A History of Glassmaking in India," Dr. Desjardins will illuminate the development of new glass recipes, the impact of increased maritime trade, the Mughal emperors’ penchant for luxury goods, and the influence of colonial consumption in India.

This lecture is part of the Women in Architecture Public Lecture Series, organized by the Master of Science in Islamic Art, Architecture and Urbanism (IAAU) program at the College of Islamic Studies.
