Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education Science and Community Development, held a Graduate Open House for prospective students on Monday, February 8th at 6:00 PM at the HBKU Student Center.
Attendees at the Open House had the chance to hear about the university’s diverse multidisciplinary programs, and were offered the unique opportunity to enjoy sample lectures given by HBKU professors. The lectures matched the broad range of subjects currently offered at graduate level by HBKU.
The sample lectures covered such diverse topics as food safety and outbreak investigation, how basic science can be used to combat the spread of disease, design and innovation’s role in sustainability, the role of translation in the modern world, constitutional law, and how computing changed our lives.
Speaking at event, Dr. Imed Gallouzi, a professor of Life Sciences at HBKU whose lecture at the Open House focused on how HBKU’s Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program provides a fountain of knowledge and a weapon against disease both in Qatar and beyond, said: “These events are important because they give us the chance not only to talk about what we teach in our programs but to actually show how we teach.
“Being offered the chance to give a sample lecture has allowed us to give a brief insight into the classroom experience and a taste of what it’s like to be a graduate student at HBKU. I hope the audience tonight enjoyed what they heard and that some were inspired to pursue advanced studies with us.”
The Graduate Open House offered attendees the chance to be among the first to hear about four proposed programs that HBKU hopes to launch in the future: a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Computer Science and Engineering, and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees in Bioengineering, Cybersecurity, and Data Science and Engineering.
Prospective students also heard about the extensive portfolio of graduate programs, spanning from Sustainable Energy, Biological and Biomedical Science, Law, and Public Health, to Audiovisual Translation, Public Policy in Islam, Islamic Finance, and Urban Design and Architecture in Islamic Societies. The breadth of subjects students can pursue at the university is targeted to match the educational, social and economic goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.
With HBKU’s main 2016 admissions deadline fast approaching, members of HBKU’s admissions team were on hand at the event to offer advice and guidance to those interested in joining the university’s expanding student population.
Dr. Khaled Ben Letaief, Provost of HBKU, commented: “In a relatively short period of time, we have attracted many world-class faculty to share their knowledge with our growing student body. By offering sample lectures at our Graduate Open House, we wanted to give attendees a small glimpse of the work being done by our professors in educating tomorrow’s leaders.
“At HBKU we are looking for students who want to broaden their intellectual depth by seeking solution to challenges that lie at the crossroads of traditional disciplines. Our programs are designed to give students the knowledge and skills needed to have a meaningful impact on their communities.”
