Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation (QF) for Education, Science and Community Development, invites undergraduate students to apply to its summer internship programs, starting May 8th and running until June 30th. Offered at Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) and Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), two of HBKU’s prestigious research institutes, the summer internships were developed to help build national research capacity and to attract students to the sciences. Students interested in participating are asked to submit their applications for both institutes’ programs by Sunday, March 20th.
Interns working within each of the two HBKU research institutes offering summer programs for 2016 will be given the opportunity to spend time at the very heart of Qatar’s effort to use scientific innovation to support research objectives outlined in Qatar National Vision 2030.
QBRI’s interns will be selected based on their academic achievements and interest in research, and will be offered a unique opportunity to get involved in the institute’s research work transforming healthcare and combating Qatar’s health challenges. They will conduct hands-on laboratory research under the supervision of QBRI experts; directly contributing to research on cancer, diabetes and stem cells. A range of educational and professional development activities will also be built into interns’ schedules to enhance their training and enrich their experience.
QBRI’s summer internship program enables participating undergraduate students to engage with leading experts through weekly seminars, workshops, and informal discussions on the latest advancements in the biomedical field. Over the course of their internship, students will not only be able to deepen their understanding of QBRI, but explore Qatar’s research priorities, as the state develops into a knowledge-economy.
Lina Hassna, Program Manager for the QBRI summer internships, noted: “We provide an enriching experience for participating students, our scientists and staff. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide talented students with the opportunity to experience the thrill of discovery and biomedical research at QBRI, while learning more about the biomedical landscape in Qatar.
“We certainly hope that our interns will pursue careers in biomedical as well as health research, returning to work at HBKU or other institutions in Qatar once they complete their studies.”
Dr. Hilal Lashuel, Executive Director of QBRI, said: “Sharing the excitement that comes with discovery and biomedical research is essential for QBRI, and preparing the next generation of scientists is at the core of our mission at HBKU.
Commenting on his research institute’s involvement, Dr. Ahmed Elmagarmid, Executive Director of QCRI, added: “This year we are pleased to provide a number of joint activities between QCRI and QBRI’s summer internship programs, providing students with tremendous networking opportunities and exposure to different fields at the intersection of computer science and biomedical science.”
Interns at QCRI, which seeks to build innovation and technology capacity in Qatar by addressing large-scale computing challenges, will also be offered the opportunity to work with specialists on research and development projects in Arabic language technologies, data analytics, social computing, cyber security, distributed systems, and computational science and engineering. A background in computer science is preferred, but is not a prerequisite to apply to the program, with QCRI also offering placements in areas such as commercialization and business planning.
Having started with only six students in 2012, the QCRI summer internship program is now in its fifth year, with interns in years past having gone on to co-author major research papers and win distinguished awards at the QF Annual Research Forum. Dr. Eman Fituri, Program Director, stated: “QCRI’s Summer Internship Program is designed to benefit and support the best computer scientists and engineers of tomorrow by giving them the opportunity to work closely with our world-class scientists and software developers. We are proud of the innovation and initiative displayed by our previous interns and look forward to welcoming new students to our state-of-the-art institute this summer.”
The summer internship programs QBRI and QCRI offer continue to build talent for national development objectives, across their economic, environmental, human and social dimensions. Such opportunities to gain practical experience complement the theoretical instruction HBKU provides across disciplines, and speak to the University’s efforts in meeting local needs and global trends.
