Audiovisual Translation: Local Responses to Global Challenges
College of Humanities and Social Sciences

This webinar will highlight Qatar’s commitment towards responding to global needs of linguistic and sensory mediation through education and social development.

As the world emerges from the pandemic, the global media market is expected to reach $2670.66 billion by 2025 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% (ReportLinker 2021). This means making information available for the estimated 400 million Arabic speakers globally while creating ideal conditions to place Arabic content in the global market.

This is doubtlessly a global challenge that demands specialized mediators, namely audiovisual translators – with linguistic, cultural, and technical skill sets – to assist the market with the required services, including subtitling and dubbing.

An international drive towards making communication available for all, including to persons with disabilities, would call for highly specialized professionals to support the development of audiovisual materials to be used in schools, museums and cultural contexts, as well as in mainstream media (television and online streaming).
