Literary Salons in South Asia | Hamad Bin Khalifa University
College of Islamic Studies

This lecture will explore the impact of 18th-century European literary salons on bourgeois culture, many of which were often supported by educated women. It will draw parallels with Mughal India under Emperor Aurangzeb, where different crises spurred a renewed focus on morality and creativity. Through poetry readings and studying figures like Khwaja Mīr Dard, this lecture will utilize original Urdu texts to uncover traces of Indian-Islamic modernity obscured by colonial narratives. Don’t miss this critical exploration of cultural intersections!

This lecture will be held in English.
