ReOrienting the Islamic Ecumene | Hamad Bin Khalifa University
College of Islamic Studies

In this lecture, Professor Armando Salvatore, a scholar of contemporary Islamic studies and comparative religion, explores new ways of understanding and studying the sociology of Islam in today’s world.

The first part of the talk explains how shifting epistemic conditions are leading people to study the Islamic ecumene from perspectives that move beyond Western ideas. This approach challenges the traditional insider-outsider dichotomy influenced by colonialist and Orientalist discourses.

The second part suggests how this reorientation facilitates a deeper understanding of the foundational processes through which human and social life is structured within the Islamic ecumene. Central to this is the role of narrative and habitus, seen as dynamic and interwoven forces that shape communal life and identity.

This lecture will be held in English.
