Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI) is a leading research institute under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). The institute addresses the Qatar National Health priorities outlined in the Qatar National Research Strategy through its dedicated research centers – the Translational Oncology Research Center, Diabetes Research Center (DRC), and Neurological Disorders Research Center (NDRC).

HBKU seeks applications for the position of Bioinformatics specialist. The role involves providing bioinformatics and biostatistics support to research projects conducted fully or partially at QBRI, and contributing to genomic sequencing projects and the scientific analysis of data generated by these projects using a variety of bioinformatics techniques and software applications.

  • Administer analysis activities and assist in the interpretation of biological information.
  • Manage genomic and proteomic data and maintain knowledge on scientific literature and prepare appropriate reports.
  • Generate, annotate, and analyze genomic data and prepare the data for further research or publication.
  • Provide effective analysis and feedback on bioinformatics, analyze data to conduct new experiments and develop new algorithms to process and analyze data.
  • Perform research and analysis in bioinformatics, coordinate with various teams, provide support to various programs in QBRI.
  • Gather primary data and integrate genomic data from various external sources. Provide training to community, and coordinate with various internal and external customers.
  • Design various new computational tools for bioinformatics, assemble, prepare data structures, and determine an effective data analysis framework.
  • Assist various departments to design figures and tables for grants, participate in lab meetings, and analyze data for laboratory members.
  • Monitor the work of trainees and process data and design innovative solutions to analyze and manage genomic data and provide support to web based interfaces.
  • Maintain and compare data for bioinformatics and perform customization of analysis as required and update databases as per genomic features and provide scientific support to staff.
  • Develop and maintain intranet and external server that provide support to laboratory protocols and prepare required reports and perform research on samples for projects.
  • Provide support to experimental data, maintain, and update development environment for staff and investigators.
  • Other reasonable tasks as assigned by supervisor.

  • Master degree in Bioinformatics/Computer Science or related discipline.
  • 6-8 years of relevant work experience including building applications\implementing analytical algorithms.
  • Experience in data analysis for next-generation sequencing (NGS) experiments, e.g. whole exome or genome, RNA-seq, DNA methylation, and ChIP-Seq.
  • Experience in the use R/Bioconductor and databases such as MySQL.
  • Working knowledge of Linux operating systems and high performance computing.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work independently and in a collegial environment.
  • Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications.
