The Hamad Bin Khalifa University Institutional Review Board (HBKU-IRB) is responsible for the ethical protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects from research risks. The IRB assures that all human subjects research activities conducted under the auspices of HBKU are ethically and methodologically sound, as required under public law and as expected by the public.
The IRB is a highly professional committee that reviews and approves human research protocols of various disciplines and all related processes and documents to ensure that the rights and welfare of human subjects are protected above all other considerations. The IRB has the authority to approve, require modifications, or disapprove all research activities that fall within their jurisdiction in conformity with all ethical foundations for the protection of human subjects. The IRB functions independently to protect its ethical mission without compromise and any perception of conflict of interest or undue influence of power.
HBKU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) seeks applications for the position of Research Coordinator. The applicant will be responsible for the effective functioning of OVPR and the entity’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) office and serve as the primary point of contact for all applicants.
- Receive, review, and track all new and existing research applications.
- Conduct reviews of all new research applications and ensure consistency and completeness before scheduled IRB meetings.
- Communicate to investigators items that require clarification, or supplementary documents required for submission to complete application for IRB review.
- Acquire and develop capabilities in ethics in human research and assist the IRB members with reviews.
- Provide direct guidance and serve as a resource to investigators and co-workers in the research office.
- Perform all communications with the investigators, respond to all IRB-related inquiries, support the applicants, and convey the IRB committee decisions.
- Prepare agendas and materials for meetings followed by producing minutes of meetings. Serve as a facilitator during IRB meetings.
- Prepare all IRB files and issue IRB approval letters.
- Ensure that the IRB Research Projects Database is up-to-date and that IRB study files are properly filed. Review and update IRB templates as necessary.
- Maintain and update the IRB members' information including rosters, CVs, and certificates.
- Assist in developing, recommending, and implementing policies and procedures to enhance the efficiency of committee operations and office functions.
- Handle the IRB office's assurance renewal process with the concerned Ministry office.
- Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor's degree in science; or a relevant field.
- 2-5 years of relevant full-time professional experience.
- CIP Certification is a must (Certified IRB Professional or equivalent).
- Proficiency with computer programs to prepare and analyze data as necessary (i.e. Microsoft Office, Excel, Word; and the Internet).
- Ability to work under strict time constraints and deadlines, and to function within a team-oriented work environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
