Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is a national research institute tasked with supporting Qatar in addressing its grand challenges related to energy, water, and environment.
QEERI – with its experienced scientists, engineers, and technicians supported by its focused management and operations teams, working within its world-class indoor and outdoor facilities – aims to make a lasting positive impact on Qatar and the region. The institute’s work is in line with the goals set forth by Qatar National Vision 2030 and is supported by Qatar Foundation Research, Development and Innovation (QF RDI).
HBKU’s QEERI is seeking applications for the role of a highly motivated Research Scientist or Senior Scientist specializing in climate science to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in climate science, atmospheric sciences, or a related field, along with a minimum of 3 years (5 years for Senior Scientist) of postdoctoral (or industrial) experience.
The successful candidate will focus on regional climate modeling and simulations, contributing to climate change impact assessments, assessing adaptation strategies tailored to Qatar and the broader Middle East region. Additionally, they will engage in public outreach and stakeholder engagement, helping translate scientific findings into actionable policies and solutions.
- Develop, optimize and apply regional climate model simulations (e.g., using WRF, MPAS or other models).
- Assess climate change impacts on key sectors such as urban environments, energy, and water resources.
- Investigate climate adaptation strategies and develop related policy recommendations.
- Publish findings in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.
- Engage with government agencies, industry stakeholders, and the public to communicate climate risks and solutions.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams on climate resilience and sustainability research.
- PhD in Climate Science, Atmospheric Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- A minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral or industry experience (5 years for Senior Scientist) in climate modeling and analysis.
- Strong background in regional climate modeling.
- Experience with bias correction techniques for climate simulations.
- Familiarity with climate impact assessment frameworks and adaptation planning.
- Strong programming skills (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, NCL) for data analysis and model development, including High Performance Computing.
- Excellent scientific communication skills, including public engagement experience.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Experience working in arid and extreme climate regions.
- Experience working with the MPAS climate mode.
- Previous engagement with policy development and climate risk communication.
- Experience in securing research funding and managing projects.
