College of Law Professor Becomes First WAML Governor to Represent GCC Region
Dr. Barry Solaiman is also the youngest member of the Board of Governors
Dr. Barry Solaiman, Assistant Professor of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Law, was appointed to the Board of Governors of the World Association for Medical Law (WAML), becoming the first member to represent the GCC region.
Dr. Solaiman received the honor at the 27th World Congress for Medical Law held from August 8 to 11, 2023 in Vilnius, Lithuania, making him the youngest member of the Board of Governors. From this new role, he will work to build stronger relationships between WAML, Qatar, and the Middle East in the coming years and advance the state of health law, legal medicine, and ethics by employing his considerable expertise and experience working in these fields.
“It is a special honor to be the first WAML Board Member to represent both Qatar and the GCC region - a unique opportunity to represent local perspectives in medical and health law on a prestigious international platform. HBKU’s College of Law is situated at a global crossroad of culture, business, and geopolitics, and acts as a knowledge hub for promoting an understanding of the importance of the rule of law in the region,” said Dr. Solaiman.
Established in 1967 at the University of Gent, WAML works to promote the study and dialogue within the areas of health law, legal medicine and ethics around the world. Aside from hosting the World Congress for Medical Law, the organization also publishes its own journal, Medicine and Law, which to date features more than 2000 academic articles written by esteemed experts from more than 100 countries.
