HBKU and QU Announce Call for Submissions for WASM Conference

Fourth World Association for Sport Management (WASM) Conference the first to be held in MENA region

QF’s Hamad Bin Khalifa University and Qatar University Announce Call for Submissions for WASM Conference in 2022

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, and Community Development (QF), together with Qatar University, have announced a call for submissions for the Fourth World Association for Sport Management (WASM) Conference, which they will host jointly in March 2022. 

Scholars, practitioners, and specialists in sport management and the business of sport will gather to share their knowledge, experiences, and expertise on the global sports industry in the months leading up to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM. The conference will provide an opportunity to promote education, research, and publications in the multidisciplinary area of sport management in Qatar and the region, including sport governance, policy and strategy, marketing, event management, and many other areas. The timing and scope of the WASM Conference mark the event as an important milestone in preparations for the hosting of the World Cup, which will kick off in November 2022.

Commenting on the significance of the event, Dr. Kamilla Swart-Arries, Associate Professor in the Master of Science in Sport and Entertainment Management program, College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at HBKU, and Co-chair of WASM Qatar 2022, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the WASM 2022 Congress. The event will bring together the collective sports industry, from leaders in academia, to sport government bodies and other entities in the sector, and will be a tremendous opportunity for knowledge sharing ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. HBKU has extended every effort to supporting Qatar as the country makes its mark in the global sporting arena by hosting the mega event but also ensuring a lasting legacy well beyond 2022.” 

Prof. Ahmed Al-Emadi, Dean of the College of Education at Qatar University and Co-chair of WASM Qatar 2022, added: “We are looking forward to the new opportunities arising out of WASM 2022 and encourage submissions that will strengthen scholarship, education, and skill-building in the multidisciplinary area of sport management.”

HBKU and Qatar University are inviting submissions on the conference theme, “Bringing the World Together: Global and Local Perspectives on Sport Management.” The submission start date is March 1, 2021, and the submission deadline is September 30, 2021. All submissions will be evaluated through a blind review process and the authors will be notified of a decision on or near November 1, 2021.

WASM is an alliance of regional associations of sport management, and the conference is in keeping with its mission to facilitate sport management research, teaching and learning excellence, and professional practice, as well as to provide a forum for the international perspective on sports management.

Qatar will be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to host the WASM Conference, and HBKU and Qatar University will work with Qatar Olympic Academy; the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s Josoor Institute; and Qatar National Tourism Council, as strategic partners of the event. 

The College of Science and Engineering at HBKU offers 13 state-of-the-art degrees across three divisions with focus areas that include Sustainable Development; Information and Computing Technologies; and Engineering Management and Decision Sciences.
