CPP Public Event Considers Use of Digital Mapping for Community Empowerment
Lecture delivered by University of British Columbia’s Dr. Jon Corbett
The growing use of digital maps and web-based participatory mapping tools by communities set the scene for a public lecture organized by Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Public Policy (CPP).
Held at Minaretein, Mapping for Change explored how digital mapping tools can be utilized for positive change and community empowerment. Proceedings considered the use of relevant technologies to enhance community influence over decision making, including greater involvement in decision making activities and processes. The lecture concluded with a question and answer session and further audience contributions.
Mapping for Change was delivered by Dr. Jon Corbett, a geography professor at the University of British Columbia’s Institute for Community Engaged Research (ICER). Dr. Corbett’s research particularly focuses on cartographic processes and tools used by communities to express their relationship to land and resources. He has previously worked with indigenous communities on several continents, including First Nation communities within British Columbia.
Speaking after the lecture, Dr. Leslie A. Pal, Founding Dean, CPP, said: “There can be no denying that digital mapping is profoundly impacting how communities work and engage with spatial knowledge. Few academics understand this transformation as deeply as Dr. Corbett, so it was a privilege to host him in Doha for this enlightening talk. We’re grateful for his thought-provoking insights and willingness to engage with our audience on these increasingly empowering and transformative technologies.”
