Discover Education City 2016: Nine universities, one place | HBKU
Discover Education City

Universities from across Education City have joined together to invite the community in Qatar to learn more about their academic offerings at Discover Education City 2016. Following the success of last year’s event, the scope of this year’s fair will again include graduate programs at the master’s and Ph.D. level as well as undergraduate and foundation programs, offered by Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), Qatar Foundation’s homegrown Qatari university, and the eight international campuses located in Education City.

The event will be held on November 9th and 10th from 9am to 9pm at the HBKU Student Center within Education City and has been designed to cater to high school students, recent college graduates, and working professionals. Organized by level of study, attendees will have a unique opportunity to gain insight into the academic offerings of nine universities in total:  Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Georgetown University in Qatar, Northwestern University in Qatar, HEC Paris in Qatar, and UCL Qatar.

Admissions staff from all the participating academic institutions will be available throughout the event to help visitors gain a thorough understanding of each program’s admissions processes. Though the institutions share a common campus, each university has its own unique culture and traditions, with the event providing visitors with an opportunity to experience the rich diversity that exists within the fabric of Education City.

Additionally, students finishing high school will be able to learn about QF’s Academic Bridge Program, a program specially designed to assist students’ transitioning from high school to education at the university level.

Commenting on Discover Education City, Dr. Nils Plambeck, Academic Dean and CEO of HEC Paris in Qatar, commented: “Preparing for our upcoming intakes in 2017 for the Executive MBA and for the Specialized Master in Strategic Business Unit Management, Discover Education City is a great opportunity for us to meet prospective participants. HEC Paris has been fulfilling its mission of training the global leaders of tomorrow and of taking active part in the production of knowledge in management. We are happy that during the last years, we have been able to fulfill this role also locally in Qatar. Therefore, we look forward to meeting prospects who are interested in transforming their careers and in contributing to creating a knowledge-based economy”.

Maryam Al Mannai, Vice President of Student Affairs at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, remarked: “As we prepare to open our admissions cycle for the next academic year, we look forward to meeting prospective students at Discover Education City. Through a unique range of research-focused undergraduate and postgraduate programs, HBKU provides university students at each level with an exceptional educational experience.  We urge members of the wider community in Qatar to visit the event and learn more about how HBKU’s innovative programs are tailored to address knowledge gaps that currently exist in the region and provide multidisciplinary advanced training in fields of need.”

Greet Provoost, Assistant Dean at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar) said: “Discover Education City is a great way to inform students and their families of the myriad of academic programs, the supportive development opportunities, and the state-of-the art features within Education City. As the first international university established within Education City 18 years ago, VCUQatar has educated students in support of Qatar's journey towards a knowledge economy, its ambitious development goals, and the preservation of its national heritage and identity.”

“We hope many students visit Discover Education City to learn about higher education opportunities available to them as they navigate their pathways to future professional and individual success.”

Dr. Rachid Bendriss, Assistant Dean for Student Recruitment, Outreach and Foundation Programs at Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar (WCM-Q), also reflected on the event: “The Discover Education City roadshow is a wonderful opportunity for Weill Cornell Medicine – Qatar to meet and guide prospective students, and identify new talents to unlock their potential.”

“Many young people will not yet have decided upon a career path, so events like this offer them the chance to find out more about what studying to be a physician at WCM-Q would be like. By meeting and interacting with our staff and students, this event represents a great opportunity for the public to learn more about the student profile needed to be successful at WCM-Q, as well as the hugely rewarding experiences that come with being a doctor and helping others.”
