HBKU organizes seminar on Muslim philosopher and scientist Ibn Sina

Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation, invites those with an interest in Islamic philosophy and history to a seminar on the life and contributions of the Muslim scientist Ibn Sina . The event, organized through the Muhammad Bin Hamad Al Thani Center for Muslim Contribution to Civilization (CMCC) at HBKU’s Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), will take place on Monday, February 22nd from 12 noon to 2pm at the auditorium of the QFIS building in Education City.

Also known as Avicenna, Ibn Sina is well-known for his contributions in the areas of astronomy, logic, medicine, music, philosophy, physics, poetry and psychology. His life and work will be commented on by a number of distinguished experts including Dr. Abdalhakeem Alkhelaifi, Professor of Islamic Philosophy at Qatar University, Dr. Yahya Michot, Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in the United States, and Dr. Syed Nomanul Haq, Professor and Advisor in Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at the Institute of Business Administration in Pakistan.

The seminar will provide attendees with the unique opportunity to learn about one of the world’s most influential thinkers, whose wide-ranging contributions extend far beyond the Islamic World. Ibn Sina’s al-Qānūn fī al-Tibb (The Canon of Medicine) was used well into the 17th century, and his Kitāb al-Shifāʾ, regarded as his magnum opus, remains an important work of philosophy and science to this date.

Dr. Aisha Al Mannai, Director of the Muhammad Bin Hamad Al Thani Center for Muslim Contribution to Civilization commented: “At our center we consider it an honor to be able to remember this great son of human civilization and recount his academic feats through the lens of three well-known Islamic specialists.”

“In line with HBKU’s aim to cultivate knowledge and support community development, the talk will highlight the life of Ibn Sina as a reminder of the Islamic Golden Age, pointing to the vast potential found throughout this region.”
