HBKU’s Translation and Interpreting Institute Opens Registration for Spring 2019 Language Courses
The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has opened registration for its spring 2019 language courses offered to both children and adults.
The new semester of courses at TII’s Language Center will introduce the wider community to an immersive experience that promotes the learning of other traditions and cultures through language.
Dr. Nima Nazari, director of the Language Center at TII, said: “Learning a new language opens up windows of opportunity, and, as evidenced by global career trends and prospects, it is hugely beneficial to have multilingual skills. TII’s broad range of courses offer an opportunity for children and adults to expand their language repertoire in a multicultural setting, where qualified instructors incorporate a number of learning techniques that promote creativity and collaboration.”
TII’s Language Center’s spring courses for children and teenagers aged five to 15 include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish, as well as exclusive courses that focus on Arabic reading. Students will learn to understand and express themselves in a language of their choice through well-structured lessons, which will incorporate a diverse range of activities such as songs, games, crafts, music, drama and art. Lesson will be held every Saturday starting January 12 until March 23 and will run for one hour and 50 minutes.
Adults can enroll for Arabic, Arabic Sign Language, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Spanish language courses, commencing January 13, 2019. Each course utilizes a blended learning approach, complementing classic textbook tuition augmented by audiovisual and multimedia resources, as well as structured classroom discussions.
Courses are open to everyone at all levels of proficiency. Based on an initial placement test to assess an applicant’s proficiency, students will be assigned to a class best suited to their level of command of the chosen language.
The spring semester courses offered by TII’s Language Center form part of the institute’s ongoing efforts to promote a culture of lifelong learning, and celebrate Qatar’s diverse society. The courses were carefully selected to cater to current and projected needs; as well as demand in Qatar and the region.
All courses will be held at the Penrose House (previously LAS) building in Education City. To enroll for one of TII’s language courses, please visit https://tii.qa/lc and https://tii.qa/kc. Registration for both the adult and children’s courses closes on January 9, 2019.
