CPP Welcomes Dr. Mark Evans to HBKU

Esteemed British academic brings wealth of experience and knowledge to HBKU

Dr. Mark Evans

The College of Public Policy (CPP) is delighted to welcome Dr. Mark Evans to Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU) as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Public Value. Previous holders of this esteemed position are Dr. Wolfgang Drechsler (2022), Dr. Mutlaq Al-Qahtani (2023), and Dr. Erin McCandless (Spring 2024). 

Dr. Mark Evans is currently Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, at Charles Sturt University in Australia and co-convenor of the Democratic Audit of Australia. He was previously: Director of Democracy 2025 at the Museum of Australian Democracy (2018-21); founding Director of the Institute for Governance and Policy Analysis at the University of Canberra (2014-18); and, the Australia New Zealand School of Government’s Professor of Governance (2009-14). Dr Mark has also held various prestigious roles in the United Kingdom including: Head of the Department of Politics at the University of York and Provost of Halifax College (1998-07); Director of the World-wide Universities Public Policy Network (2002-5); and Vice President of the UK’s Joint University Council for the Applied Social Sciences (1999-04). 

Dr. Mark has a longstanding track record both in studying and designing new forms of citizen-centered governance to address the disconnect between government and citizen. He has provided policy advice, and managed research and evaluation projects for 26 countries and international organizations, including the United Nations and the World Bank. In 2007, he worked at Renmin University and the China Academy of Governance in Beijing as the co-convenor of the China-Europe Public Administration Program. 

Dr. Mark was editor of the international journal Policy Studies from 2005 to 2021. Selected recent books include: with Patrick Dunleavy Australia’s Evolving Democracy (LSE press, 2024); (with Gerry Stoker) Saving Democracy (Bloomsbury, 2023) and Evidence based Policymaking and the Social Sciences (Policy Press). He holds honorary professorships with the universities of Gadjah Mahda, Renmin, York and Hull.
