HBKU’s Translation and Interpreting Institute Offers Intensive Workshop for Hospitality Professionals

The Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII), part of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is to host an Accessible Hospitality and Events workshop from January 6 - 9, 2019.

Dr. Josélia Neves, a professor at TII, CHSS, who teaches the Masters in Audiovisual Translation program, will lead the workshop, which aims to introduce participants to the requirements of making a hospitality venue universally accessible through a holistic communicative approach.

Commenting ahead of the workshop, Dr. Neves said: “We are keen to offer the workshop to those who are currently working in hospitality or studying towards a career in the industry. The course is structured in such a way that participants will have access to both theoretical and hands-on training in accessible hospitality services, to ensure they reap the maximum benefits from the workshop and achieve their personal and professional objectives.”

Participants can expect a combination of presentations, breakout groups, and scenario-based problem solving that will introduce them to key aspects of universal access in hospitality and the determination of site-specific needs. The program will offer a basic understanding of the solutions available for the development of inclusive, user-centered experiences.

The workshop will have four sessions, which will address: The Nature of Universal Access through the Communicative Approach; The Communicative Approach in Detail; Auditing in Practice (on site exercise); and The Holistic Picture: Inclusive User-centered Experiences.

Students and professionals who are working in or have an interest in the communication, hospitality, or tourism industries are encouraged to sign up for the workshop. No previous knowledge or training is required.

TII’s Accessible Hospitality and Events workshop will be held on January 6-9, 2019 in Classroom A015 at the Penrose House building (formerly LAS building) at HBKU from 4-7pm. For more information, and to register, please contact: 44542495 or sabdelazim@hbku.edu.qa
