The transformative potential of integrating engineering, technology, and healthcare set the scene for the College of Science and Engineering’s (CSE) Healthcare 5.0 Symposium.

A joint initiative with Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Healthcare 5.0 convened leading experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals to discuss advancements in healthcare delivery through the use of operations management and advanced analytics among other innovative engineering techniques and tools. The event highlighted the transformative impact of these tools on healthcare decision-making and practices, underscoring the importance of integrating intelligent systems in a patient-focused approach promoting both patient care while reducing burden on health systems.

In doing so, Healthcare 5.0 focused on three topics that bridge the gap between current challenges and future solutions in healthcare. Consideration was given to the role of predictive analytics for planning patient influx, managing disease outbreaks, and optimizing resource allocation. From there, operations management was highlighted as a cornerstone for enhancing healthcare efficiency, with discussions centering on improving decision-making processes through effective capacity planning and appointment scheduling. Lastly, participants discussed the advanced role analytics tools play in streamlining healthcare operations, including diagnostic accuracy, service delivery, successful implementations, and ethical considerations.

Besides representatives from the CSE and HMC, discussions at Healthcare 5.0 were informed by distinguished speakers from renowned global institutions. These included Mohamed Zied Babai, Senior Professor in Operations Management, Kedge Business School, and Oualid Jouini, Professor and Head of the Operations Management Research Group, CentraleSupélec, both located in France.

Speaking after the symposium, Dr. Adel Elomri, Associate Professor, and Leader of the Healthcare Operations Management Research Group within the CSE’s Division of Engineering Management and Decision Sciences, remarked: “This event not only underscored the essential role of engineering and technology in enhancing healthcare efficiency but also the value of our ongoing collaboration with HMC. This partnership, which currently supports several PhD and MSc students conducting research in healthcare operations management, is vital for fostering interdisciplinary efforts to usher in a new era of healthcare that blends technology and patient care to substantially improve outcomes.”

The symposium is expected to lay the groundwork for new strategies and methodologies in healthcare, promoting a more integrated, efficient, and patient-centered healthcare system globally.
