CSE and AMPP Highlight Careers in Corrosion

Event also featured guest speakers from Qatar’s private sector

The College of Science and Engineering (CSE) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), in collaboration with the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) Qatar Chapter, hosted a workshop to highlight advancements in corrosion research and explore career opportunities in materials and corrosion engineering. The event brought together students, faculty, and industry professionals to discuss the increasing demand for corrosion specialists and the role of academia in preparing graduates for careers in the sector.

In their opening remarks, Dr. Marwan Khraisheh, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, and Dr. Hassan Bazzi, Associate Dean for External Affairs, CSE, welcomed attendees and outlined the importance of strengthening partnerships between industry and academia. Locally based experts participating in the event included Dr. Nick Laycock, Lead Materials and Corrosion, Pearl GTL, and Shell Qatar, who gave an expert talk on corrosion in stainless steel.

Mercedes Perez de Obanos Bas, Head of Corrosion Engineering, Barzan, and South Areas, Integrity and Reliability Department, QatarEnergy LNG, joined members of CSE and the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) for a panel discussion on how young professionals can advance their careers in the sector. The event also featured Khalil Abed, Board Director, AMPP, outlining his organization’s mission, certification program, and membership benefits.

Reflecting on the event, Dr. Marwa AbdelGawad, Assistant Professor of Practice, CSE, and organizer of the workshop, stated: "This event gave students valuable exposure to industry expectations, certification opportunities, and professional development. Our collaboration with AMPP Qatar will definitely strengthen our partnership with industry and provide students with the resources they need to grow in this field. I hope this inspires more students to pursue careers in corrosion, as well as encourage further collaboration within the profession."
