CSE Faculty Win Scientific Excellence Awards

Successes are a testament to College’s commitment to academic and scientific excellence

Entity:  College of Science and Engineering

Two faculty members from the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) have been internationally recognized for their contributions to the fields of 3D content, artificial intelligence, and related disciplines.

Dr. Marco Agus and Dr. Jens Schneider, both Associate Professors, recently attended the 29th International Conference on 3D Web Technology in Guimarães, Portugal, where they received two Scientific Excellence Awards. The first was awarded for “Neuroverse: Immersive Exploration of 3D Ultrastructural Brain Reconstructions for Education and collaborative Analysis,” a project with the University of Turin which explores new ways of virtual presences in the Metaverse to teach anatomy and neuroscience to university students.

A second award was given for “ZLS: An Efficient Lossless Compression for Depth-Video Streaming.” A collaboration with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the project lays foundations for low latency, low bandwidth streaming of 3D avatars in tele-presences. It also allows for compressed storage and transmission of depth videos, data essential to capture 3D information in real-world environments.

Dr. Schneider has also been invited to join the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society. Founded by Cornell University in 1886, Sigma Xi members include Nobel laureates and top scientists, past and present. Dr. Schneider’s membership of this prestigious organization reflects his work to advance the fields of visualization, artificial intelligence, and health informatics. Both academics’ achievements also underscore the CSE dedication to excellence in scientific and educational advancements.
