In keeping with its aim of facilitating expertise and building capacity in Qatar and beyond, the College of Public Policy (CPP) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) recently collaborated with the University of Maryland (UMD)’s School of Public Policy to deliver a joint executive course on program evaluation. It is one of the first program evaluation courses offered in Qatar, and also the first executive course by CPP and its program on Social Policy and Evaluation Research (PROSPER).

يظل سرطان الثدي أكثر أنواع الأورام السرطانية شيوعًا بين النساء في دولة قطر وفي العالم، فضلاً عن كونه السبب الرئيسي للوفيات المرتبطة بالسرطان لدى السيدات (1). تستهدف الاستراتيجيات الاعتيادية الحالي لمكافحة السرطان الحالية الخلايا السرطانية على أساس الخصائص الأكثر انتشارًا بين هذه الخلايا (مثل معدلات التكاثر المرتفعة). ومع ذلك، فإن هذه الخصائص ليست بالضرورة شائعة بين جميع المرضى، وغالبًا ما لا تكون فريدة من نوعها بالنسبة للخلايا السرطانية، مما يؤدي إلى فعالية متغيرة للعلاج تختلف من مريض لآخر وآثار جانبية غير مستهدفة.

Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women in Qatar and worldwide, in addition to being the primary cause of female cancer-related death (1). The current gold standard anti-cancer strategies target tumor cells based on characteristics that are more prevalent in these cells (such as high rates of multiplication); however, these properties are not necessarily common to all patients and are often not unique to tumor cells, resulting in variable treatment efficacy among patients and off-target side-effects.

بالتزامن مع اليوم العالمي للمرأة في الهندسة، نظمت كلية العلوم الإنسانية والاجتماعية بجامعة حمد بن خليفة بالتعاون مع الجمعية القطرية للمهندسين والجمعية القطرية للمهندسات ندوة عبر الإنترنت بتاريخ 23 يونيو. وتماشيًا مع شعار هذا اليوم العالمي، ركزت خبيرات بارزات في مجال الهندسة على الدور الرئيسي الذي تؤديه المهندسات في إدارة الأعمال الصناعية المهمة والحفاظ على البنية التحتية خلال جائحة كوفيد-19، سواء في العمليات الصناعية وفي قطاعات البحوث والابتكار.

International Women in Engineering Day was the motivation for a webinar organized by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) on June 23, in partnership with Qatar Society of Engineers and Qatar Association for Women Engineers. In keeping with the theme of the global day, Engineering Sheroes focused on the major role of women engineers in maintaining critical industrial operations and infrastructure during the COVID-19 pandemic, both in industrial operations and in research and innovation. 

اختتمت كلية الدراسات الإسلامية بجامعة حمد بن خليفة، مؤخرًا، مؤتمر بحوث الطلاب 2021. ووفر المؤتمر منصةً مهمةً للطلاب للمشاركة، والإلهام، واستعراض النتائج المهمة للبحوث التي أجروها خلال فترة دراستهم. ويستند المؤتمر على مجلة الطلاب العلمية التي تم إطلاقها تحت عنوان "الإسطرلاب"، حيث يهدف المؤتمر إلى الإحتفاء بالأعمال البحثية التي يمكن تطبيقها على الموضوعات الإسلامية المعاصرة. 

The College of Islamic Studies (CIS), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), recently concluded its Student Research Conference 2021. The conference presented an important platform for students to engage, inspire, and share significant outcomes of the research they have conducted throughout the course of their studies. The conference builds on the recently launched CIS student journal, Astrolabe, and complements its overarching aim of celebrating compelling research works with applicability to contemporary Islamic subjects.

في ظل القيود المفروضة على حركة السفر في جميع أنحاء العالم، فإننا نواجه ما تسميه جريدة واشنطن بوست "حقبة جديدة من التباعد العالمي". فقد علَّقت جامعات ومؤسسات أكاديمية في قطر وجميع أنحاء العالم الدراسة في الخارج، والبحوث الميدانية، وبرامج التبادل الطلابي، وهي فرص تقليدية لتعزيز العلاقات الناعمة مع البلدان والثقافات الأخرى. وفي خضم التعليق المطول لهذه المبادرات بين الثقافات، هل هناك طرق جديدة لتشجيع التبادل بين الناس؟

With international travel restricted, we are facing what the Washington Post terms “a new era of global distancing”. Universities and academic institutions in Qatar and across the world have suspended study abroad, field research, and exchange programs, traditionally opportunities to strengthen soft ties with other countries and cultures. Amid the protracted suspension of these intercultural initiatives, are there new avenues to encourage people-to-people exchanges?

شاركت كلية العلوم والهندسة بجامعة حمد بن خليفة في رعاية المؤتمر الدولي السادس عشر لتكنولوجيا الإقناع، الذي استضافته جامعة بورنموث بالمملكة المتحدة عبر الإنترنت خلال الفترة من 12 إلى 14 أبريل الجاري. وتمحور المؤتمر حول تصميم تكنولوجيا مقنعة يمكن أن تؤثر على البشر لتغيير السلوك، بالإضافة إلى أخلاقيات هذا التأثير.
