Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s (HBKU) College of Law (CL) collaborated with the Supreme Judiciary Council of Qatar to host a special visit from the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Uzbekistan, The Honorable Bakhtiyor Islamov.

Chairman Islamov shared insights into the courts of Uzbekistan as well as recent national developments, highlighting efforts to promote the rule of the law in the country. His presentation also explored judicial independence, the role of technology in the judicial system, and the importance of the judiciary in protecting individual rights.

Members of the audience were able to engage with Chairman Islamov in conversations surrounding the legal system in Uzbekistan, including the state of legal education in the country, and topics concerning judicial bodies around the world.

The visit of The Honorable Islamov reinforced existing ties between HBKU and legal institutions in Uzbekistan, as two CL faculty members previously taught at Tashkent University.

Commenting on the visit, Dr. Susan L. Karamanian, Dean, College of Law, noted: “Chairman Islamov provided details about critical reforms, which are aligned with international best practices. It was exciting to hear about them and we look forward to working with Uzbekistan and its legal institutions in areas of mutual interest, particularly AI and the law, alternative dispute resolution, and constitutional law.”
